Join us for the 21st annual Summer Solstice Celebration on Monday June 20 at Burton Barr Central Library, located at 1221 N. Central Ave. Herald the first day of summer and the longest day of the year while marveling at the architectural magic of Burton Barr Central Library with its renowned architect, Will Bruder. Watch from the unique vantage point of the Great Reading Room as man-made engineering collaborates with the sun, the most important source of energy for life on Earth, to reveal the moment of solstice.

11:00 AM | Fifth Floor Summer Solstice 21st Anniversary Event Join us in the Great Reading Room for live music. The space opens at 11:00 AM with music from the Therapeutic Harp Foundation, pianist Lynne Haeseler, gongs by Jere Friedmann and African drumming by Keith Johnson and Sam Anderson
12:15 PM – 12:30 p.m. | Fifth Floor Architect Will Bruder will talk about the unique building features that create a visual effect of light and shadow at solar noon (12:30.01 PM).
12:30 p.m. | Fifth Floor Music performance ends with a unique version of Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria in excelsis Deo, conducted by Michael McCall with the Civic Chorus and “Flash Choir.” Similar to the idea of a Handel “Messiah Sing In,” the “Flash Choir” represents anyone who wants to sing, brings their musical score to Vivaldi’s Gloria and sing along with the ensemble.
11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. | Fifth Floor Library Customer Account Staff will be on hand to sign you up for a Phoenix Public Library Card.
11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. | Fifth Floor Teen Volunteers will be available to sign customers up for the Summer Reading Program
1 - 3 p.m. | Pulliam Auditorium, First Floor Hance Park Master Plan Update. See the Final City of Phoenix approved Hance Park Master Plan in Video and Renderings. Hance Park Conservancy neighboring stakeholders will be there to answer questions and take your comments
1 - 4 p.m. | Fourth Floor Press-a-Verse Drop by the Rare Book Room and print a keepsake on our century-old Washington Hand press.
2 - 3 p.m. | MACH1, Fourth Floor Crafty Science Make fun crafts including Fairy Ribbon Wands and Construction Paper Sun Catchers.
All Day | Second Space Gallery, Second Floor - The Arizona Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects (AzASLA) 2016 Awards Exhibit features this year’s state award recipients of notable landscape architecture work in Arizona. The work presented in this exhibit features extraordinary and unique projects designed by local landscape architects and landscape architecture students. Categories were based on general design, planning, residential, student work, and unbuilt work.
