The Yarnell Hill Fire: 25 Days Later 6/17/2014 12:00:00 AM
The Yarnell Hill Fire: 25 Days Later
Burton Barr Central Library’s @Central Gallery will host an exhibition of photographs by George Berke, titled “The Yarnell Hill Fire: 25 Days Later."  An opening reception with the artist will be held 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19. The Woodworks band will perform providing a mix of rock, folk, blues, indie and alternative music.   The reception is sponsored by Friends of the Phoenix Public Library. Yarnell Hill Fire: 25 Days Later

Berke visited Yarnell, Arizona 25 days after the 2013 fire that overran and killed 19 city of Prescott firefighters, and was astounded by the destruction and loneliness of the area. When viewed together, his photographs present a collection of details that paint a vivid image of the event.

Berke has a Bachelor degree in fine arts from Binghamton University in New York and a background in newspaper design and graphics editing. He was a member of The Times-Picayune’s Pulitzer Prize-winning team that produced “Oceans of Trouble,” a 1997 series about the world’s dwindling fish populations.
